Identification and Placement

How Students Are Identified

The identification process begins the moment a child is enrolled:

1. Language Survey: All parents complete a survey (available in multiple languages). If any answer indicates a primary language other than English, a referral is made.
2. Proficiency Assessment: A licensed ELL teacher administers the WIDA Screener within 30 days of the start of school, or within two weeks for mid-year transfers.
3. Notification: Parents receive results and placement recommendations promptly. You have the right to accept or decline services; however, state law requires that even if services are declined, the student must still participate in annual state English testing.
