Mathematics (Kindergarten)

Overview:

Mathematics instruction in Norfolk Public Schools is guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics, including the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Our goal is for students to develop curiosity, confidence, and strong foundational number sense. Instruction includes hands-on exploration, collaborative discussions, and opportunities to explain their reasoning in age-appropriate ways. Teachers balance whole-class lessons, small-group instruction, independent practice, and time for reflection to meet students where they are through a workshop model.

In Kindergarten, students focus on recognizing, counting, and comparing numbers; connecting number names with written numerals and quantities; and understanding addition as putting together and subtraction as taking apart. They also explore and describe shapes, learning to identify their attributes and relationships. These experiences build the foundation for later problem-solving and reasoning.
