Art
In grades 5 and 6, students build greater independence in their art class as they develop a more personal artistic style. They explore new materials and approaches and refine their techniques. Students begin to make intentional decisions about how to communicate their ideas through their artwork. Fifth and Sixth graders begin to write and speak about their artistic choices and make decisions about how their artwork is displayed. Students also begin to use art vocabulary to interpret and evaluate artwork from a range of time periods and cultures. They connect their work to history, media and other disciplines and begin to see art as a powerful form of communication and expression.
