Mathematics (Grade 6)

Mathematics instruction in Norfolk Public Schools continues to emphasize reasoning, problem-solving, and application. Students are encouraged to think critically, justify their solutions, and make meaningful connections across topics. Instruction balances whole-group lessons, targeted small-group instruction, and opportunities for collaboration and independent practice, ensuring that all students are both supported and challenged.

In Grade Six, students connect ratio and rate reasoning to multiplication and division, strengthening their proportional thinking. They extend their understanding of number to include the system of rational numbers, including negatives. Students also apply their knowledge of fractions through division, write and interpret expressions and equations, and develop foundational skills in statistical thinking.
