English Language Arts (Grade 6)

English Language Arts instruction in Norfolk Public Schools emphasizes close reading, critical thinking, and effective communication. Students collaborate to examine challenging texts, practice reasoning and argumentation, and strengthen their ability to write with clarity and purpose. Instruction includes direct work in vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and writing craft.

In Grade Six, students read widely and deeply across genres to expand knowledge and explore the human experience. They use comprehension strategies such as analyzing evidence, comparing texts, and evaluating authors’ claims. Students also integrate information from multiple sources to construct arguments, write essays, and express ideas in both creative and academic forms. Writing includes journals, critiques, narratives, and formal research-based tasks.
