Mathematics (Grade 5)
Mathematics instruction in Norfolk Public Schools fosters independence, perseverance, and flexible thinking. Teachers guide students in using strategies such as number talks, collaborative problem-solving, and structured small-group lessons. Students have opportunities to use manipulatives, games, and technology to build conceptual understanding alongside fluency.
In Fifth Grade, students extend their work with fractions by developing fluency with all fraction operations. They also build fluency with whole number and decimal operations and connect decimals to the place value system. Students deepen their understanding of division by working with two-digit divisors and explore measurement by solving problems involving volume.
