English Language Arts (Grade 5)
English Language Arts instruction in Norfolk Public Schools fosters independence, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate effectively through both reading and writing. Students participate in rich discussions, practice close reading of complex texts, and apply comprehension strategies to deepen understanding. Instruction continues to emphasize explicit word study, vocabulary growth, and structured writing instruction.
In Fifth Grade, students analyze and synthesize information from multiple texts, identify themes, and consider different perspectives. They continue to build vocabulary knowledge, including Greek and Latin roots, to strengthen reading comprehension and academic language. In writing, students produce clear, organized essays and reports, support their opinions with evidence, and refine their use of grammar and mechanics.
