Mathematics (Grade 4)

Mathematics instruction in Norfolk Public Schools emphasizes both procedural fluency and deep understanding. Students are encouraged to make connections across topics, choose efficient strategies, and explain their reasoning. Through collaborative discussion, hands-on tasks, and real-world problem-solving, students grow as confident mathematical thinkers.

In Fourth Grade, students build fluency with multi-digit multiplication and gain understanding of division with multi-digit numbers. They develop a stronger sense of fractions—exploring equivalence, adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, and multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Students also analyze and classify geometric figures based on their properties, strengthening their reasoning and vocabulary in geometry.
