English Language Arts (Grade 4)

English Language Arts instruction in Norfolk emphasizes critical thinking, comprehension of complex texts, and clear communication in writing. Students participate in collaborative discussions, respond to texts with evidence, and refine their ability to analyze and compare ideas. Instruction includes explicit lessons in word study, comprehension strategies, and structured writing tasks.

In Fourth Grade, students read a wide variety of increasingly complex literature and informational texts, using evidence to support their analysis. They continue to expand their vocabulary through word parts, context clues, and direct instruction. In writing, students compose multi-paragraph narratives, opinion pieces, and informational essays, with attention to organization, elaboration, and the use of supporting details.
