Mathematics (Grade 3)

Mathematics instruction in Norfolk Public Schools helps students develop deeper conceptual understanding while applying math to meaningful contexts. Students learn to see connections among concepts, use visual models, and explain their reasoning in multiple ways. Instruction is responsive to student needs and includes whole-class lessons, small-group instruction, independent practice, and time for sharing and reflection.

In Third Grade, students build understanding of multiplication and division within 100, laying the foundation for future work with proportional reasoning. They develop an initial understanding of fractions as numbers and begin to compare and represent them. Students also explore two-dimensional shapes, and study rectangular arrays and area as ways to connect geometry and multiplication.
