History and Social Science (Grade 3)
In Third Grade, students explore Massachusetts and New England, beginning with their own city or town. They study interactions among Native Peoples, European settlers, and Africans in early New England, and learn about Massachusetts leaders in the American Revolution. Students are introduced to founding documents of Massachusetts and the United States in age-appropriate ways, helping them begin to understand ideas about self-government, rights, and responsibilities. They also practice civic skills by helping to create classroom rules and discussing what it means to contribute to their community.
