Mathematics (Grade 2)

Mathematics instruction in Norfolk Public Schools emphasizes reasoning, flexibility, and problem-solving as students move from foundational skills toward more complex applications. Instruction includes opportunities for collaboration, hands-on exploration, and discussion so that students can explain and refine their thinking. Teachers provide targeted support and enrichment through small-group instruction, while independent practice allows students to build fluency and confidence.

In Grade Two, students extend their understanding of the base-ten system and strengthen strategies for addition and subtraction with larger numbers. They work toward fluency with basic facts within 20, build understanding of measurement using standard units, and explore geometry by describing and analyzing shapes.
