English Language Arts (Grade 2)

English Language Arts instruction in Norfolk Public Schools emphasizes the systematic development of reading and writing skills through explicit instruction and meaningful practice. Students engage in whole-class lessons, small-group instruction, and independent reading and writing. Teachers use assessments and observations to personalize instruction and ensure that each child continues to grow as a reader and writer.

In Grade Two, students consolidate phonics knowledge and move toward greater fluency in reading longer texts. They strengthen comprehension by asking and answering questions, summarizing, and identifying main ideas and details. Students also continue to build vocabulary through morphology (prefixes, suffixes, root words) and word study. In writing, students create longer pieces in narrative, informational, and opinion genres, using more structure and detail.
