Mathematics (Grade 1)

Mathematics instruction in Norfolk Public Schools is guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics, including the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Our goal is to help students develop a strong foundation in mathematical thinking, problem-solving, and communication. Students explore real-world problems, share their reasoning, and learn multiple strategies for solving tasks. Lessons balance whole-class instruction, small-group work, independent practice, and time for reflection. A variety of tools—such as manipulatives, visual models, and digital resources—support learning and deepen understanding.

In First Grade, students build fluency with addition and subtraction within 20, strengthen their understanding of place value (tens and ones), and begin solving problems with larger numbers. They also explore measurement using standard units and investigate the attributes of shapes, laying the groundwork for later geometry concepts.
